RESEARCH AND PROPOSAL

'I believe that healthy social housing can contribute to the well-being of all the community.'

Survey respondent and local Yarra Ranges community member

Personal Statement

As a young adult coming into the world I feel acutely aware of the impact from pressing issues such as climate change, a global pandemic and population growth. I am alarmed that so many people within our communities are increasingly facing insecurities such as the basic right to housing. As part of researching for this report I heard first hand the impact of the current housing crisis from people who are either experiencing this in their own lives, or at the forefront of service provision. These conversations as well as data analysis and reading numerous reports reveal the extent of this issue right at my doorstep.

This research report and proposal is my attempt to firstly deepen my own understanding and secondly to hopefully inspire action for what is possible for local councils, such as the Yarra Ranges, to invest in quality social housing that provides safe, secure and integrated homes.

Having experienced living in a wonderful example of social housing for a short period in Denmark I felt inspired by what could be possible here.  I believe we cannot continue to have inaction or handball this critical issue for somewhere into the future or to wait for another generation to have to deal with.

I acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation as the traditional custodians of the land in which the Yarra Ranges lies, and recognises their continuing connection to land, winds and water of this area. I pay respects to their elders past present and emerging and extend respects to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. I also acknowledge there is much work to be done to reach a place of sovereignty for all in this country.
